Date of visit: May 18, 2012, around 10:00 a.m.
This is the last day of driving in Spain. We are going to enter Madrid this afternoon and return the car at Atocha station.
Avila is a certified World Heritage city located in the middle of the road from Salamanca to Madrid.
If you visit the city from the Salamanca side, i.e. from the northwest, you can see the old town surrounded by magnificent walls from a slightly elevated position on the opposite bank, as you can see.
This is quite a powerful landscape.
Yes, this city is characterized by its city walls, and these walls are the reason why it is a World Heritage Site.
In fact, I had visited Spain in 2008, and at that time, I had passed right by this city by car.
We passed through it on our way from Segovia to Caceres. Both Segovia and Cáceres are world heritage sites, but I didn’t realize that this Avila was a world heritage site and a nice town because I didn’t have enough knowledge & research at that time.
So I happened to drop by and was impressed by this magnificent castle wall, but due to time constraints I could only see it from the car.
So, after four years, my wish to visit this city came true.
When I entered the city, I felt that the city was not so important. I was a little disappointed because it was just a normal city…
The outside is really magnificent, though.
Maybe I was too disappointed or too tired on the last day, I took no photos of the inside of the castle wall….
It’s true that there were many cathedrals, but I don’t think it was as full of attractions as wikipedia says. But I might have thought so because I’ve already seen cathedrals here and there. (I don’t care about the details too much because I’m basically just sightseeing in the atmosphere, lol)
Did you delete it by mistake?
Nevertheless, I was very satisfied just to see the splendid castle wall.
It’s earlier than planned, but I’m heading to Madrid to return the car, it’s less than an hour away and I only have a few days left in the Audi. (To be continued)
P.S.
このアヴィラ、wikipedia情報によりますとなんと、
海抜1,117mの高さにあり、スペインの県都でもっとも標高が高い。
I heard that. I remember thinking that it was certainly chillier than I expected for the weather.
それにしてもwikiに掲載されている雪景色のアヴィラには驚きました。とても美しい!
