Date of visit: August 11, 2010, around 1:00 p.m.

After Eisenach and Wartburg Castle, we head east on the Autobahn. Our next destination is Weimar. Weimar is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the “Capital of Classicism”. It is also part of the “Bauhaus and Related Sites in Weimar and Dessau”, which was inscribed as a World Heritage Site (Cultural Heritage) in 1996.

ここヴァイマル、実はワタクシにとって記念すべき「訪問ヨーロッパ世界遺産 通算100箇所目」となる街です。わーい。

The distance is a little over 80km, but you can fly mostly on the Autobahn, so it takes less than an hour. By the way, Autobahn is free.

It was a little difficult to find a parking lot, but we arrived at the city center safely. The weather is not so good.

Weimar is a city in Thuringia, Germany, and one of the country’s major historical and cultural centers. Bach, Goethe and Schiller have all been associated with the city.

At any rate, we head for what looks like the central square.

The impressive building on the left is the City Hall.

Well, there is Goethe’s old house in this area, but it was just a normal German house (lol). (laughs) “Goethe used to live here!” and that was the end of my excitement…

We will visit the Weimar National Theatre. It’s about a 5 minute walk.

This is a plaque from a church we passed on the way there. It seems that Luther had lived there.

It is a small German provincial city, but it was full of historical charm.

By the way, I don’t know much about it myself, but I found this in the city, another World Heritage Site “Bauhaus and related heritage in Weimar and Dessau”.

I don’t know if this is relevant, but the building next to this poster (sign). Well, is it “like that”?

I saw a comment in a tweet that I saw during my trip that someone who knows a lot about architecture is interested in it. By the way, I found out from Wikipedia that Kandinsky is also related to this place. If I had studied a little more and visited there, I might have enjoyed it more and more.

さて、次は本日ホテルを予約しているライプツィヒへと向かいます。(続く)
