Date of visit: April 20, 2011, around midnight
We arrived at Locronan about an hour south of Le Faou on a slightly winding road, and it was one of the villages we were most looking forward to visiting, along with Vezelay.
The location is around here.
Locronan is a picturesque village located in Brittany, a region in northwestern France. It is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, and for good reason. The town is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, including rolling hills, lush forests, and sparkling coastline.
The village itself is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. The houses and buildings are made of granite and are adorned with intricate carvings and details. Many of the buildings date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, and walking through the narrow streets feels like stepping back in time.
At the heart of the village is the Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle church, a magnificent structure that dates back to the 15th century. The church is a prime example of Gothic architecture and features stunning stained glass windows, intricate carvings, and a soaring bell tower.
In addition to its rich history and stunning architecture, Locronan is also home to a thriving artistic community. The village is known for its pottery, weaving, and other traditional crafts, and visitors can browse the shops and studios of local artisans.
Overall, Locronan is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Brittany. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and breathtaking landscapes, it is no wonder that it is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Anyway, it’s very beautiful in every website, magazine and photo book.
Parking was very plentiful so we had no trouble parking at all. It’s free.
When you go up the hill from the parking lot and enter the village, you will suddenly see this scene. It is impressive.
Just a minute or two walk will take you to the central square in front of the church.
A beautiful stone town as far as the eye can see in 360 degrees. This is the “most beautiful village in France” that I was looking for and imagining.
This place is not a convenient place for transportation, but it seems to be a famous tourist spot. As a matter of fact, it had a parking lot where a lot of sightseeing buses can stop. You can see that they are putting a lot of effort into tourism, including the preservation of the town.
That’s why you’ll find a wide range of restaurants and souvenir shops.
Actually, I had lunch in this village. Unfortunately, it was not a very good restaurant… (Oh, it’s not the restaurant in the picture below)
The town of Lochronan was founded in the 10th century, so it has a history of over 1000 years.
The church in the center of this city was also very wonderful.
It is also very mysterious inside. The stained glass images illuminating the inside of the church were impressive.
We were more than happy to be here when the weather was so nice for such a lovely village. It is definitely one of the most beautiful villages in France. I would definitely recommend a visit if you have the chance.
Now the next step is to go to the south of Brittany.
