By August 2023, my tour of the most beautiful villages in France is reaching its final stages, and I’ve progressed to village number 16. This time, I visited Grignan, a beautiful village located in the Drôme department. This village has also been newly registered since 2017. The Drôme department is situated north of Provence, and further north, you will reach Lyon. It’s somewhat in the middle, making it a less well-known tourist destination, often overlooked. However, it boasts numerous picturesque and beautiful villages, making it a worthwhile area to explore. Of course, having a car is essential.

During my visit to Grignan, the weather was clear. However, the climate in this area, which is somewhat closer to the mountains, is not too hot in August, making it very pleasant and easy to stroll around.

The village is located on a small hill, and there’s a magnificent castle at the top, which you can enter for a fee. The castle is very impressive, and the interior exhibitions are full of interesting sights. The view from the castle terrace was particularly stunning. The good weather that day allowed for many beautiful photographs to be taken, which I have compiled and included at the bottom of this post.

The atmosphere in the village was also very pleasant. There were many restaurants, and the place was bustling with people. Initially, when planning this trip, I considered staying in this village because it has a Michelin one-star restaurant. However, considering the schedule for visiting other places, this plan did not materialize. Nevertheless, given the village’s overall charming atmosphere, I would like to stay here on my next visit.

For a detailed description of the village, please refer to the information below.

This castle dates back to the 11th century, but it was significantly renovated and expanded in the Renaissance period. It is famously associated with Madame de Sévigné, a well-known French aristocrat and writer of the 17th century, as her daughter lived there. Visitors can explore the castle’s beautifully decorated rooms, courtyards, and gardens, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the terraces.
