Date of visit: May 14, 2013, around 11:00 a.m.
On May 14, blessed with fine weather, we went to the second village.
I thought it wasn’t so far from Monestier, the first place we visited on this day, but it was more difficult than I thought because we followed the Google Map navigator and headed there on a narrow, small public road. Ummm Google teacher….
Although we joined the N88, a large national highway connecting Albi and Rodez, once we left it, the roads leading to the village became more and more winding, as befits a medieval bastide, a military stronghold, and even though it looked close on the map, it was actually very difficult to drive.
It was a tougher road than expected, but we arrived smoothly without losing much time. It was not difficult at all to find a parking lot.
Now, for this Sauveterre de Rouergue, see my previous post:.

This area is called the Rouergue region, and the name “Sauveterre de Rouergue” may have come from the fact that this town was (or is thought to have been) one of the “Sauvete”, a church protection settlement that was built in the 12th century.
In the Middle Ages, the city was very important as a fortress city, passing through the Albigensian Crusade and the Hundred Years’ War, etc. However, in the 17th century, the importance of the city rapidly decreased due to the drastic decrease of population caused by the plague epidemic and the drastic change of transportation network in the south of France caused by the construction of the Canal du Midi, etc. That’s right.
And modern times. It was also chosen as one of the most beautiful villages in France for its medieval history and beauty.
Although there are not many of them, they have been transformed into a village that individual tourists like me occasionally visit.
Although there is not much to see, the alleyways of the village and the buildings facing the central square will take you back to the medieval times.
This arched structure is very impressive when it comes to bastide. This structure is often seen in the buildings facing the central square.
Of course, the lovely alleyways are still intact.
And I also went to church.
Still, it’s a beautiful day.
Do we have to worry at all about the weather today?
It is a rather long drive to the next village.
