8 hours drive in total to the “heel” of Italy May 2014 Italy’s most beautiful village tour Local Report No.14

201405 Italy

Local time: May 6, 2014

I’ve finally got internet access at the hotel, so I’ll update this page.

Just when you think you’ve lost your nerve, there’s this!

It was an amazingly sunny day. It was definitely the sunniest day since the beginning of this trip.

And the villages we visited were wonderful. No, it’s normal compared to France.

Stilo, this is a 30 minute drive from the hotel we were staying at.

The next stop was Santa Severina, 2 hours from Stilo. The view from here was amazing. I’m so glad it was sunny.

But the only highlight was the Castello. I think it was a good museum.

After this, probably the longest drive of the trip: 5 hours to the village of Otranto, on the Salento Peninsula, the heel of the Italian peninsula.

First across from toe to toe and then into the heel. Then southward through the Achilles tendon to reach the destination.

Non-stop driving until then. And no highways at all.

However, we were able to reach Otranto without any difficulty because the terrain was much flatter than expected and the roads were well marked with many motorways.

The hotel in Otranto is a good hotel for the price. But the hotel restaurant was not so good.

Sightseeing in Otranto at dusk. I was very satisfied to see the cathedral of high reputation.

The city is also very nice.

And dinner. I opened a bottle of white wine and got quite drunk.

I was so dizzy that as soon as I got back to my room, I didn’t take a shower and fell asleep.

The reason why I was so dizzy may have been due to the cold medicine I took. The hotel the day before was a bit cold and there were some dust mites, and I think I also developed allergic rhinitis.

It doesn’t seem to have much of an impact on tourism.

Three days left.
