Finally, to Sicily! May 2014 Italy’s Most Beautiful Village Tour Local Report No.7

201405 Italy

Local time: April 29, 2014

We’ve finally landed in Sicily! And it’s been sunny since day one!

About two hours from Amantea, where we stayed, we reached the toe of the Italian peninsula. The first stop of the day is Chianalea di Scilla.

After all, the best way to see a beautiful village is under a clear sky.

Then we headed further to the tip of Sicily. On the way, we encountered a small problem that the exit indicated by the Google map navigation system was blocked due to construction work on the highway, so we had to take a detour, but we arrived at Villa San Giovanni safely.

From here you can take a ferry to Sicily.

It was my first experience to take a ferry with a car. I have taken a ferry with a train in Germany and Denmark.

The weather was fine in the coastal area, but it was raining and cloudy in the mountainous area near this village.

Perhaps because of its mountainous location, it was a beautiful day in Messina just after landing in Sicily, but as we approached the village, the clouds got thicker and it finally started to rain. The weather in this country is so fickle…

However, this first beautiful village in Sicily was very beautiful.

We had a small problem here. It seemed to take more fuel than expected to get here, and we had less than a quarter of fuel left. Fortunately, there was a small gas station in this beautiful village and we were able to get back home.

The next stop was a beautiful village called “San Marco d´Alunzio”, about an hour west of here. This was the village we were going to visit just before we left Sicily on the 5th.

This village is also on a cliff. The weather was still rainy and cloudy. And very cold.

It seems to be a village with a very long history according to the official guidebook (only in Italian), but I was disappointed that it wasn’t much of a village even though I had a hard time getting there. That’s why I was so tired at once, so I ended my tour of the village for the day.

To go to Aeolian Islands by ferry on the next day, we arranged a hotel in the port town of Milazzo, where the ferry arrived and departed. I checked into the hotel at about 7 o’clock in the evening.

Milazzo, a small port town, but it is also the gateway to the Aeolian Islands, tourists were also seen here and there.

Before going out to eat, I checked the arrival and departure time of the next day’s ferry.

And dinner at a restaurant adjacent to the port.

Dinner here and the wine was very good. Especially the wine. A pitcher of local wine cost 6 euros a litre. A white wine with firm fruitiness, but still dry, a perfect balance of taste. The color is also a little dark.

I thought a liter was a lot for two couples, but we drank it up in no time.

Let’s go on a tour of the World Heritage Aeolian Islands, what will the weather be like?
